This agreement will allow the state-owned company to participate as a shareholder in HIF projects, develop a business model for marketing carbon-neutral fuels, and advance the modernization of existing infrastructure in Magallanes.
A new step in their alliance was taken today in Paris (France), by the Empresa Nacional del Petróleo (Enap) and HIF Global, as they signed a commercial agreement that will accelerate the development of e-fuels in Chile.
This updates previous agreements between the two companies and opens the possibility for ENAP to join the HIF e-Fuel production projects in Magallanes as a shareholder. It will also enable the development of a project to facilitate the process from the arrival of equipment to the export of final products and define a business model for the state-owned company to market carbon-neutral fuels. The agreement establishes a modernization plan for the Cabo Negro docks and their associated infrastructure.
The Minister of Finance, Mario Marcel, highlighted this agreement in the global context of reduced emissions and greater demand for clean energy and green hydrogen production in the future. "This demand is a window of opportunity for our country that will not automatically translate into investments, but we need to foster collaboration and support between the public and private sectors to seize these opportunities. With the signing of this memorandum of understanding, we are no longer talking about green hydrogen as an abstraction or possibility; we are discussing the logistical requirements to set up plants to produce ammonia or synthetic fuels that can be exported. We are now delving into the matter, and the projects are beginning to take shape.”
“This agreement is great news. It reaffirms the strategic role of the public company in the development of the green hydrogen industry and its derivatives while deepening the public-private collaboration that will enable us to move together towards better productivity, environmental standards, and decent employment in the Magallanes region, giving value to the assets that ENAP has in the area, which are key to the logistics chain of this new industry," said Energy Minister Diego Pardow.
“The potential for low-carbon synthetic fuels not only represents a technological advance but also a paradigm shift. They can be a key component in supporting decarbonization and opening the door to a more sustainable future. As a state-owned company, we are convinced that our role is crucial in realizing these initiatives and moving decisively toward the energy transition process,” said Gloria Maldonado, Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of ENAP.
“The energy transition represents a unique opportunity for the country and for us, and we are convinced that the only way to tackle it is through public-private collaboration. This agreement shows that when there is a real commitment and shared vision, reliable and efficient solutions can be established. This adds to the progress Enap has already made in this area for the development of new low-carbon businesses,” said ENAP CEO Julio Friedmann.
"Over the last few years, we have developed a fruitful alliance with ENAP that we want to continue deepening. All the fuel expertise of this company now has the opportunity to transition towards a more sustainable era, thanks to our synthetic gasolines. There are many synergies we want to project into the future,” said HIF Global President and CEO Cesar Norton.
