API Grade =141.5/ (specific gravity) - 131.5

API gravity determines whether crude oil is light or heavy and allows for the calculation of the tons of oil discharged. Light crude oil has an API of 40-50, while heavy crude oil has an API of 10-24. Sulfur and API are the properties with the most significant influence on crude oil prices.

Specific Gravity

It is the ratio of the weight of a substance to the weight of an equal volume of water at the same temperature. In petroleum, the API specific gravity is used and measured using hydrometers that float in the liquid. The API degrees are read directly on the scale protruding from the liquid at the point of the flotation line. The API scale emerged due to the ease of calibrating the hydrometer stem uniformly. API = 141.5 / (specific gravity) - 131.5.
API determines whether crude oil or a product is light or heavy and allows the calculation of the tons of oil discharged. Light crude oil has an API of 40-50, while heavy crude oil has an API of 10-24.
Sulfur and API are the properties with the most significant influence on crude oil prices.
