MagallanesIn the area of social and environmental responsibility and a projection toward the community, ENAP has made progress and received recognitions in Magallanes in recent years.
With respect to the environment, ENAP has been working jointly with CONAMA since 2007 in the sustainability of the Bahía Lomas wetlands, the second most southerly Ramsar site in the world, both in the site’s projection toward the regional community and in training the Company’s personnel in wetland protection.
ENAP also continues to work in cleaning up dumps containing traces of crude oil, applying its environmental bio-remediation plan initiated eight years ago.
ENAP is actively involved in the Regional Public-Private Round Table for Energy Efficiency, leading, jointly with Methanex, an urban communications campaign in the main towns and cities of the 12th Region.
With the same purpose of contributing to saving and efficiency in the use of energy, ENAP inaugurated the Bioclimatic Building in Punta Arenas. This modern structure was the first in Chile to be constructed by a public entity. Apart from its innovative and transparent architecture, its principal attribute is that it can retain heat and natural light, permitting energy savings of 68% with respect to a conventional building.
Similarly, ENAP, together with Methanex and Geopark, took the initiative in founding the Chamber of Oil, Gas and Coal in Magallanes in order to coordinate efforts for promoting the development of the hydrocarbons industry in the 12th Region.
Under a collaboration agreement between SERNATUR, INACH and ENAP in Magallanes, a study, design and construction was carried out of 10 geo-sites in Magallanes (identified by 16 signs in the towns of Punta Arenas, San Gregorio, Torres del Paine, Río Verde and Laguna Blanca), seeking to provide tourists and the regional, national and international communities, with geological information on the most important natural and touristic points of the telluric geography of the southern Patagonia.
Lastly, ENAP, Methanex and the regional government organized the seminar “Magallanes, Land of Energy”. In a massive, participative and absorbing meeting, the region debated its energy development. For the first time, the present and future situation of non-renewable resources (hydrocarbons and coal) was analyzed publicly; the matrix with non-conventional renewable energies (wind, solar and tidal) was projected; and the efficient use of energy as a central citizen strategy was promoted. Overall, the efforts and challenges necessary for diversifying the energy matrix were identified on this occasion.
As a result of its social responsibility actions and its projection to the community, ENAP in Magallanes has received the following recognitions:
